The town was also the site of Tabor College, a Christian institution modeled after Oberlin College. Unique to its history, Tabor College even operated its own 9-mile stretch of railroad, connecting the Wabash and Malvern sections.

A significant part of Iowa’s anti-slavery movement, Tabor played a key role in assisting freedom seekers on the Underground Railroad, offering refuge to those escaping slavery. Many abolitionists called Tabor home, shaping its legacy as a community that stood for justice and freedom.
